National Literacy Mission (NlM) - 'SAAKSHAR BHARAT '

The Eleventh Five year Plan has laid greater emphasis on education and
literacy as an instrument for achieying inclusive growth.



National Literacy Mission (NlM) - 'SAAKSHAR BHARAT '

The Government has introduced a series of programmes with the
objective of promoting literacy and adult education. Of these,
National Literacy Mission is the most prominent initiative. It was
launched in 1988 to impart Function literacy to illiterates in the age
group of 15-35 years in a time boud manner.

However, NLM was later recast as 'Saakshar Bharat' in order to
accommodate government's policy of women empowerment. It was realized
that literacy is a prerequisite to achieve empowerment. So, 'Saakshar
Bharat' was launched with a prime focus on universal female literacy.
'Saakshar Bharat' envisages to provide an impetus to achieving the
goal of a fully literate society engaged in lifelong the goal of a
fully literate society engaged in lifelong learning. This flagship
programme of the government covers all adults in the age group of j154
and above, with a specific focus on the female population. It operates
through Lok Shiksha Kendras (Adult Education Centres ) and
Jan Shikshan Sansthans.
